For the past several years, we have partnered with the To Our House program in order to supply much needed warmth and shelter to men in the New River Valley. What this looks like is that 5-20 homeless men spend the evening and overnight in our building, 130 Jackson. Volunteers are needed for lots of different roles to help make the guests’ stay a great one!
Volunteer Roles
Van Driver– Would involve driving the van in the evening between 5-6p to Christiansburg to pick up the guests and bring them back to 130 Jackson
Greeter– It is very helpful to have someone at the building around 5:30p to welcome/greet our supporting church volunteers (bringing the guests’ evening meal) and make sure they can find whatever they need until the van driver gets back
Evening Point Person/Overnight Stay– This would generally be a male who is comfortable staying with the guests overnight to be present if any building-related issues arise (where are the light switches, how to lock the doors, etc.) Time commitment would be 5p one night to ~8a the following morning. This volunteer usually drives the van in the evening and following morning.
Shower Driver– It is helpful to have someone who can drive NLCF’s van so the guests can go to the Rec center and take a shower.
Laundry– Each night, we will need someone who is able to do the guests’ laundry and return it by the following evening. Help is also needed on Saturday to wash larger loads of linens.
General Volunteering– We also need people to simply hang out with the men who are staying the night! Whether it is watching a movie or playing cards, this is an easy way to meet new people in a relaxed environment.
